Primary and secondary girls in uniform walking to school today as the new term begins, albeit one week late due the floods, in most states today. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Seth Akmal, January 12, 2015.For the first time ever some students wore casual clothes to school, while others still bore the odour of floods that hit their schools when the 2015 schooling session began in most states today.Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Johor began their schooling session yesterday while other states, including Pahang and Perak are still hit by floods.Those who worn casual clothes involved sixth form students affected by the floods following the new ruling on school wear.Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today said 438,869 Year One pupils and 352,999 Form One students registered for the 2015 schooling session nationwide."Overall there are 4.88 million students in national schools and national secondary schools throughout the country this year," he said in a media conference at Sekolah Kebangsaan Cyberjaya and Sekolah Menengah Cyberjaya today.The schooling session throughout the country should have started on January 5 but was postponed for one week in the wake of the worst flood disaster that affected several states.Forty-one schools will have their schooling session postponed further until January 18 as these are still used as flood relief centres.Four of the affected schools are in Kelantan, 18 in Pahang and 19 in Perak.In Penang, state education director Datuk Osman Hussain said a total of 22,324 Year One pupils began their schooling session in 276 primary schools in that state.A survey revealed that Form Six students in secondary schools in and around George Town still wore school uniforms despite being permitted to wear normal clothes from this year.SMK Penang Free principal Jalil Saad said a special briefing pertaining to the new ethics on school wear would be given to 120 Form Six students this week to ensure they adhered to the guidelines set."We also have no objections if the students still wish to wear uniforms. White coloured clothes and trousers are the identity for Form Six students in this school since the 1960s," he said.In Negeri Sembilan, a total of 16,786 Year One pupils and 14,500 Form One students began their schooling session statewide, involving 349 primary schools and 121 secondary schools.State education director Datuk Kalsom Khalid said all school furnishings and equipment, such as chairs and tables were adequate.In Perlis, 3,909 Year One pupils in the state began their schooling session while schools also disbursed the initial school aid of RM100 provided by the government to ease the financial burden of the students' families, said state education director Rooslee Ismail. – Bernama, January 12, 2015.
