Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has appointed Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob as the new chairman effective today.Sulaiman succeeds Datuk Seri Dr Halim Shafie, who has been appointed the new chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC)."We are happy to welcome Sulaiman as the new chairman of TM board."With his vast experience and knowledge, we look forward to Sulaiman’s guidance and leadership as the company continues on its transformation journey and next phase of growth," TM's group chief executive officer, Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, told Bursa Malaysia.Sulaiman, 66, is currently chairman of the Minority Shareholders Watchdog Group, Malaysian Institute of Economic Research and Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd.He also teaches economics and public policy as Adjunct Professor at the University of Malaya and at Universiti Tun Abdul Razak.Sulaiman is trained in economics, first at the University of Malaya, and then at University of London. He completed his Ph.D. study at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in the US in early 1986.Zamzamzairani also expressed his gratitude to Halim for his dedication, leadership and contributions to the TM Group during his tenure."We would like to take this opportunity to record our highest appreciation to Halim for his immense contributions to TM."Having long served the telecommunications industry, his stewardship and guidance have led the company to where it is today," he said.During his chairmanship, TM has achieved several milestones including the successful roll-out of the High Speed Broadband project as well as the introduction of UniFi – the first triple-play service in the country – driving TM beyond being the Broadband Champion towards becoming the nation’s one and true Convergence Champion.Halim was appointed chairman of TM board in July 2009."We will continue to support Halim in his new appointment at MCMC in realising the digital agenda for the nation. – Bernama, January 12, 2015.
