The Friday sermons have never encouraged extremism or violence as alleged, said a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom (pic).On the contrary, he said, the sermon was a requirement in the Friday prayers which was delivered orally and carried educational elements to give advice on religion, to give inspiration and create consciousness."It also conveys the national policies and current issues among the Muslims. Can the reminders among the Muslims be construed as extreme?" he said in a statement today.He said it was the role of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) to publish the text of the Friday sermons and coordinate activities on the pulpit just like the administration in places of worship of the other religions which had their own activities and administration.As such, he said, the allegation that Jakim was a body that promoted or encouraged extremism during the delivery of the Friday sermon was an irresponsible and most serious act. – Bernama, January 10, 2015.
