Fewer flood evacuees in four states – Bernama


The number of flood victims at the relief centres in four states was 10,346 as at 9am today compared with 12,971 last night.However, two new relief centres were opened in Bentong, Pahang, late last night after two villages in the district were inundated by flood waters.The two centres are now housing 99 victims from 23 families from Kampung Chergar Medang and Kampung Batu 1 Chamang.A spokesman for the Pahang police contingent headquarters' flood operations room said the total number of flood evacuees in the state dropped to 5,256 from 7,807 last night.He said 29 relief centres were still operating with Pekan district housing the highest number at 2,675, followed by Kuantan (888), Maran (848), Temerloh (437), Rompin (262), Bentong (99) and Bera (47).A Bentong district police headquarters spokesman said the Bentong-Raub road was closed to all vehicles due to serious soil erosion and strong currents at the Kampung Baru Bentong bridge.Road users have been advised to alternatively use the Bentong-Karak Highway-Cinta Manis-Sertik-Mempaga, Lebu-Raub or Sertik-Kuala Krau routes.In Perak, a state National Security Council (MKN) spokesman said the number of flood evacuees at the relief centres dropped from 2,735 last night to 2,661 this morning.He said 14 relief centres were still open with Perak Tengah having the highest number of evacuees at 1,965, followed by Hilir Perak (465), Manjung (155) and Hulu Perak (76).In Kelantan, the state MKN said the number of evacuees at 27 relief centres remained at 2,366 since last night, with Gua Musang having 1,157, Kuala Krai (1,016), Machang (100) and Tanah Merah (93).In Johor, a state Disaster Operations Control Centre spokesman said the number of evacuees at four relief centres in Segamat remained at 63 since last night.The Jabi-Bukit Tempurung road in Segamat was still cut off, the spokesman said. – Bernama, January 11, 2015.
